Our three Ewing & Associates offices have again placed Toys for Tots collection boxes in Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Sherman Oaks.  The collection boxes will remain in place through December 22, 2011. Toys of all monetary value will be distributed to needy children. Often, there are few gifts for children over the age of 10 so a special consideration for these children is always appreciated.

Barone’s opens express pizzeria in Woodland Hills

Father and Son Mike and Stephan Monteleone have opened another Barone’s location but with a different business model.  In our fast paced society, Barone’s has modeled its new express restaurant with the entire menu available to go.

Barone’s hasn’t lost their delectable flavor, however.  The rectangular, thin crust Neapolitan style pizza still remains.  With 65 years of experience, Barone’s now implements contemporary means of ordering via text messaging.

Barone’s is now located at 22435 ventura, east of Shoup.

D.J. Morgan of Taft High School in Woodland Hills has verbally committed

He will attend and play football at the University of Sothern California. Morgan is ranked by Rivals.com, a college sports recruiting site as the 64^th best prospect in the country and 3^rd best all purpose running back nationwide. He is drawing comparisons to his future teammate at USC, running back Joe McKnight.

Morgan is not the only player on his team drawing attention from college scouts, however. Lucky Radley and Brent Williams are also being heavily recruited to play at the college level. All three of these young men will have the opportunity to attend major Universities, earn a degree, and play football at the next level.

Alumni of the Taft High School Football program include Jeff Fisher who is the coach of the Tennessee titans and Steve Smith who won a super bowl with the New York Giants.

Pet Protection Tips

Recently, Jessica Simpson had her precious Malti-Poo Daisy was taken by a coyote in front of her very own eyes.  Daisy was given to her by her ex-husband Nick Lachey. The singer posted on Twitter the following statement “My heart is broken because a coyote took my precious Daisy right in front of our eyes. HORROR!”

The area that we call home is one that we share with coyotes. Homeowners in suburban areas such as Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village and throughout LA County areas have noticed the coyotes have become increasingly bold over the recent years. They have injured or killed pets, as have bit children and adults. The abundance of food, water and shelter available in suburban environments draws the wily animals into residential neighborhoods, where they soon learn that most humans are not a threat.  Once comfortable in suburbia, some coyotes become proficient in attacking domestic cats and small dogs as prey.

Here are some prevention tips to share with your family friends and neighbors:

1. Keep small pets (cats, small dogs and other pets) indoors from dusk until dawn.   Or keep pets in a coyote-proof yard, area or cage from dusk until dawn.
2. Install a fence or convert your fence to prevent coyotes from entering your yard.
3. Feed your pets indoors.  Or if you feed them outdoors do so during the day and never leave pet food out at night.
4. Make sure trash is not left outside in bags and that all trash cans have secure lids with locking mechanisms.  Secure the cans to a fence or wall with rope or elastic cord so the trash cannot be tipped over.
5. Install motion sensitive lights in your back yard and around your house.
6. Don’t leave fruit, berries or compost on the ground or uncovered.
7. Don’t overflow bird-feeders. Hang them high or in areas that are not accessible to coyotes.
8. NEVER feed coyotes.
9. You can install one or more 7 foot or higher posts with a platform at the top for cats to use as an escape from coyotes.  The posts need to be made of a material that the cats can climb.  When being chased by a predator a cat can climb the post and sit on the platform until it is safe to descend and the coyote is gone.
10. Clear brush and vegetation to remove habitat for small animals that may attract coyotes and to remove areas where coyotes can hide while stalking their prey.
11. Always keep pets on a leash when walking in parks, forest areas or in residential areas.

LA CC to host site for 2017 Walker Cup bringing some of world’s best golfers.

The Walker Cup is the Ryder Cup but for amateur players from the United States, Great Britain and Ireland. The Walker Cup match consists of the original format that the Ryder Cup used to have. The Match employs a combination of foursomes (alternate-shot) and singles competition and was originally the format used for the professional equivalent Ryder Cup.

The Walker Cup is played every two years and rotates between sites in the U.S. and overseas. The last time the Walker Cup was in California it was held at cypress point. The united states have won the last three Walker Cups leading up to the next showdown at Royal Aberdeen golf club in Scotland in 2011.

We all remember Bryon Russell and Michael Jordan’s legendary battles on the basketball court. Now, both are retired but Bryon Russell keeps active by playing pick up games at the Calabasas recreation center.

Last week Michael Jordan was inducted into the basketball hall of fame and a war of words between the two has begun. Russell was quoted as saying Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be waiting in California – in my basketball shorts.

“I’ll play his a— right now,” Russell told Yahoo! Sports. “This is a call-out for him to come play me. He can come out here in his private jet and come play. He’s got millions of dollars. He can pay for the jet. He can meet me at the Recreation Center in Calabasas.

Ron Howard’s father was a writer for The Flintstones and an occasional actor who would bring his son onto the set with him. In Frontier Woman, an abysmal western featuring the elder Howard, young Ron made his film debut at the age of one. He was famous playing Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show, and remembers that even at the age of six or seven, the program’s producers welcomed and incorporated his suggestions. Later child acting included The Music Man with Robert Preston and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father with Glenn Ford.

As a young man, he starred as a hick opposite John Wayne in The Shootist, as an everykid in American Graffiti, and as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. Still, when Howard first said he wanted to direct, it was generally taken as an unintentional joke. Howard made a deal with low-budget producer Roger Corman, agreeing to star in Corman’s Eat My Dust if he could star and direct the subsequent Grand Theft Auto.

Eat My Dust made money, as most of Corman’s films did, but Grand Theft Auto made more, and its success allowed Howard to direct several television movies during Happy Days breaks. After the sitcom ended, he directed Night Shift, which made Michael Keaton a star, Splash, which did the same for Tom Hanks, and Cocoon, which made Howard’s name as a director. Virtually all of his previous work had been in comedy, but Cocoon — science fiction with an all-star cast of Hollywood elderlies — was unexpected. Howard’s best accolades have come for Parenthood with Steve Martin, Apollo 13 with Hanks and Bill Paxton, and A Beautiful Mind with Russell Crowe. Howard received the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for A Beautiful Mind.

Howard makes enjoyable popcorn movies that do not insult an audience’s intelligence. His “controversial” adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, which infuriated Opus Dei and was called sacrilegious by the Catholic Church, was a harmless spy thriller, and even Howard’s critical failures, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, tend to do well at the box office, while his box office duds like Cinderella Man at least earn good reviews.

His films often feature roles for his brother, Clint Howard, their father, Rance Howard, and Howard’s wife, Cheryl. There was even a part for Corman in Apollo 13. Still active on television, Howard produced 24 with Kiefer Sutherland and Arrested Development with Jason Bateman.
